On many bake ovens, the belt is supported inside the oven by cast iron skid bars (aka cast iron slide supports). To prevent metal to metal contact between the steel belt and the skid bars, the skids must be lubricated with graphite. An easy way to ensure that the supports remain lubricated is to replace every tenth cast iron slide support with a graphite slide support.
Graphite provides the following advantages:
- The inside of the belt does not need lubrication periodically or before startup
- The graphite coating on the inside of the belt reduces friction induced belt vibration
- The graphite helps prevent metal to metal contact between the cast iron skids and reduces or eliminates loss of belt flatness
